Sun King Brewery will serve its end customers at its Broad Ripple Taproom on December 19th due to rising rents on Broad Ripple Avenue and future road construction.
Sun King co-founder Dave Colt described the decision to close the Sun King Barrel House Broad Ripple. As a “temporary break” from the neighborhood known for entertainment and nightlife.
Indianapolis-based Sunking is likely to show Broad Ripple’s presence in the future, according to Colt, but 1021 Broad Ripple Avenue, where Thr3e Wisemen Brewing sold beer and food from 2011 to 2019. It is different from the address of. Sunking purchased Thr3e. Wisemen business at the 2019 auction.
The Sun King site is part of the Broad Ripple Station Retail Center managed by LOR Corp, based in Indianapolis. Attempts to ask LOR representatives for comment have failed.
With the construction of Broad Ripple Avenue between College Avenue and Primrose Avenue planned for several months in 2022, Colt said traffic and potential customer declines are inevitable. According to the Indianapolis Office of Public Works, part of Broad Ripple Avenue will be closed for four months next year. Closures affect one block at a time. Modifications include upgraded stormwater infrastructure, wide sidewalks, and new traffic lights.
“We are very grateful to the people who visited the Broad Ripple location,” Colt said. “It’s sad to say that we’re temporarily out of business.”
Colt said there was no temporary dismissal of staff due to the closure of the tap room.
“Everyone working at Sun King Broad Ripple was given the opportunity to choose a different location to go to work,” he said.
Opening its own brewery in 2009, Sun King has satellite locations at Fischer’s, Carmel, Kokomo, and Indianapolis International Airport.
Thr3e Wise Men was the property of Scotty’s brewery. Scotties from Indiana sold the Scotties Brewhouse Chain in 2016, and Scotties Holdings filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection two years later.
Wise and a team of investors now own a roots burger bar in Muncie. He plans to open roots locations in Indianapolis and Carmel by February.
When Sun King opened the Broad Ripple location, the company introduced the seafood restaurant Offshore as an on-site food vendor. Later, offshore was replaced by the burger restaurant One Trick Pony.
One Trick Pony will end Broad Ripple with Sun King, but both companies will maintain the association in Hamilton County. One trick pony occupies one of the counter service stalls in Fischer’s Test Kitchen, which operates in the Sunking Tap Room in the Fishers district.
