Max’s Garage is an NFT project created by Dave Plowden to bridge the NFT space for philanthropic purposes. The rapid rise of his NFTs (or non-fungible tokens) over the past few years shows that the digital world is not going anywhere anytime soon. His vision for Plowden at Max’s Garage is to eradicate the negative stereotype that NFT projects are nothing more than get-rich-quick schemes. His goal is to leverage NFT’s rapid fundraising capabilities to influence his IRL (real life) community with his art.
Collection and its story
Max’s Garage started with a Genesis collection called “1st Road Trip”. The first collection has 20 of his tokens, each representing a GIF featuring hands playing with toy vehicles. From red pickup trucks to taxis to green tractors to colorful ice cream trucks, each NFT in the collection is unique, creative, and adorable.
Behind the art lies the unique story that gave way to this playful and approachable collection. The image was inspired by a boy named Max, the son of Plowden’s best friend. After seeing one, he decided to use his creativity to contribute to an organization that helps children. Max’s favorite toys are cars and fire trucks. Because he likes the feeling of rolling objects and moving them in real time. As a result, Plowden decided to create Max’s Garage, featuring the hands of Max or one of his friends playing with a toy vehicle.
Change the tone of the NFT world
Max’s Garage has different goals and values than the typical beats of the NFT space. Dave Plowden created this collection with no intention of getting rich. Instead, his 100% of the proceeds from each NFT purchase will go to organizations that help children.
In April 2022, Plowden pledged to donate 100% of the proceeds from Max’s Garage 1st Road Trip collection to Best Buddies International’s Pittsburgh chapter. His first Road Trip collection launched on April 22, 2022 and sold out within 15 hours. Then there was a vehicle auction for Max’s fire engine, where it was sold for US$2,969 (1 ETH at the time) to Cindy, who uses @Cindyth1_nft on Twitter. Plowden has also partnered with another of his NFT projects, Ugly Sweaters by Ira Magnusson, to release an additional honorary NFT on April 24th. His two bears from Magnuson’s collection drive his VW-style van on a road trip. All in all, sales of Max’s Garage 1st Road Trip collection have brought him over $7,600 to Best Buddies Pennsylvania.
“Creating Max’s Garage made me realize that there are some great people in this world who want to support what I’ve started,” Plowden said. Mike Cannings and Ashley Bestos of the thriving NFT collection Lyke Island reached out to Plowden to help launch Max’s Garage and Best Buddies Pennsylvania where he donated $1,000. Lyke Island has leased intellectual property from one of his NFTs, “Pippin’s Farm.” Plowden used a green tractor as a utility vehicle in their first Road Trip Collection.
On May 23, 2023, Dave Plowden and Max delivered a donation check to Best Buddies’ Pittsburgh office. They were welcomed by development director Samantha Civitate. The $7,638.49 raised for Best Buddies Pittsburgh will be donated to a cooking contest that combines Pittsburgh’s top chef and people with intellectual disabilities for an event to learn new cooking skills and have fun.
