The McMichael softball team used late-game heroes to defeat Four Bush 7-5 at the end of the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A Playoffs in East Bend.
One of those heroic acts came in the form of a two-run home run from two-out Haley Joyce in a tieball game in the top of the seventh inning.
However, in front of Joyce’s long ball, the No. 13 Lady Phoenix dragged 5-4 to the sixth top.
Joyce jumped to Brooke Davis on second base after Savannah Rockhart, who became home in the third inning, deliberately walked. Lockhart advanced to the center with a single from Makena Stewart, scoring a goal in Bradin Case and drawing the match.
After pitcher Erie Southern hit Cary Balls on the pitch, freshmen gathered themselves and triggered a flyout to Emily Hopper and Jada Johnson.
Forbush and McMichael, who finished the season 19-7, finished the first three innings of the game as they were drawn 4-4.
Lady Phoenix (21-7) jumped into a 4-0 advantage with a third top highlighted in Rockhart’s Grand Slam.
Davis put the Lady Falcons on the board in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single.
Forbush loaded the base and tied the game with a two-run single after Emma Sorrel’s single and Aria Wilson scored two hits in the game. Corbin Brown also scored at bat in Wilson’s wild pitch.
Wilson gave the 4th Lady Falcons a run batted in in the bottom of the 5th inning with an RBI single.
Southern was defeated by the Lady Falcons because he allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and defeated 5 in a complete game.
